How to use Naver Map in Korea (and why not Google Maps)

3 min readUpdated 2026-06-01

This surprises everyone: Google Maps doesn't do walking or transit directions inside South Korea for regulatory reasons. Naver Map (or KakaoMap) is the standard, and its English interface is good. Set it up before you need it.

  1. 1

Install Naver Map and switch to English

Download Naver Map and set the app language to English in settings. The map labels, search, and directions all work in English once you do.

  2. 2

Search by place name or paste Korean

Search English names of major places directly. For smaller spots, paste the Korean name (from a blog or a friend) and Naver finds it precisely.

  3. 3

Use it for transit and walking

Naver gives subway platforms, the best car to board, bus arrival times, and step-by-step walking routes — the things Google can't provide here.

    Ride the subway

Common questions

Is KakaoMap or Naver Map better?+
Both are excellent and similar. Naver Map has the widest English support for visitors; KakaoMap pairs neatly with Kakao T for taxis. Pick one and learn it.
Will Google Maps work at all?+
It shows places and driving estimates, but not walking or public-transit routing inside Korea. Don't rely on it to get around.
